The Closing of Another Year 2011

Sometimes life gets so busy that when someone gasps, seeing that it’s December on a calendar you nod your head but feel like you don’t have enough time in your day to make a comment about it. That is how we felt this year with our marriage, our wedding (separate occasions) all of our travels and our new jobs.

Of course, being newlyweds the biggest thing that happened for us this year was getting married. It really does feel like the entire year revolved around that one day and the two week honeymoon immediately following in Caribbean but we have done plenty of other things.

We found ourselves getting our passports stamped in the Bahamas and Canada this year. We also explored some new states including Montana, Idaho, Florida, Colorado, Texas and Oregon. Places we ended up in that we’ve been before include California, constant travel throughout Washington State and Utah.

So now that we have an overview, here are some of our “New Year’s Resolutions/Focuses” for 2012

Places We Want to End Up in 2012:

This year we are pretty focused on our jobs since we have a dream of either: (1) buying a big enough sail boat to live on and sail around the world for the rest of our lives or (2) buying a plot of land in Belize and building our dream home on it. We still have travel goals for 2012 that we need to check off our lists and we have decided on Mexico, Ireland and as far as domestic travel goes Linda really wants to backpack through Arizona for two weeks or so to see all the sites.

That is another focus for 2012 – not necessarily new travel, but a new way to travel. We have always been avid day hikers but this year we have planned out a couple of 4 day and up backpacking trips with a group of our friends that live far from us so we can focus nothing on spending time with people we love and keep moving forward with nothing more than a sack and a tent.

More Stuff:

We have big dreams and unfortunately they are expensive that is why both of us will be working hard this year in attempts to branch out into new hobbies and possibly turning them into buisness ventures such as photography and writing. Getting these somewhat off the ground would definitely be high on the list of resolution priorities. Here is a list of everything else:

  1. Be more active and involved in new activities (Devin)
  2. Finish writing a novel (Linda)
  3. Own property (either a boat, empty plot of land or anything else)

Do any of our resolutions match up with yours or are you taking on a different approach this year? Tell us about it in the comments section below – we’d love to hear about your plans and resolutions for 2012 and how you are planning on achieving them!

Canyon Lights at Capilano Suspension Bridge

There are countless ways to celebrate Christmas thanks to how beautifully diverse the world is. This year we found ourselves pretty far away from friends and family so decided to make the short trip from Seattle to Vancouver, British Columbia to get our passports stamped. We ended up at Capilano Suspension Bridge in North Vancouver on Christmas Eve and were excited to see that they had an evening lighting exhibit. Here is some photo’s and video of the night:

An Ode to Portland, Oregon

We ended up making the three hour drive from Seattle, WA to Portland, OR for a week of fun and adventure. From the looks of it, there was so much to do in Portland and we were determinded to have an amazing time. Unfortunatley, things turned out a little foggy as we discovered most of the exciting things we were going to do in Portland were actually hours away. Despite being lied to by tripadvisor and Google about activities to partake in we did find ourselves enjoying the rediculous amount of gardens, local pizza resturants, crazy donut shops and experiancing Portland’s “Keep Portland Weird” campaign.

This is just a little video we made of some city views and we hope you enjoy!

Hidden Gems: Mount Maunganui

Its Christmas morning and you are six years old. You wake up, not realizing that you fell asleep. Disregarding the fact that you missed Santa Claus AGAIN, you run to your parents room and jump up and down on their bed as they tease you about not getting up for several more hours.

Finally, the parents are up, coffee is being made and you allow yourself to go into the living room where Santa took a bite of your cookie and left a thank you note for the carrots.

You stop and take a moment to process what is in front of you. So many presents wrapped in beautiful bows, red, green and blue flooding from under the tree. That feeling of seeing the beautifully wrapped gifts, not knowing what treasures each one holds is how we felt about this weeks “Hidden Gem.”

The town of Mount Maunganui is located in the Bay of Plenty on the north island of New Zealand. Too many people not living on the north island have not heard of it or traveled there so as our favorite spot in New Zealand, we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to pay tribute.

During this part of our New Zealand trip we were living out of our car. We had stumbled across Mount Maunganui by hitting a random spot on our GPS and driving for what seemed liked days.

When we got there the views took our breaths away:

We spent two weeks in this town hanging out with locals. We rented an apartment for about 4 days, and then rented out a house for another week.

The remaining time we camped out in our station wagon on the beach with many others doing the same. By the way, if you want a unique experience, camp out in a car, next to the beach during a storm. Not only will you find yourself wondering if your car will end up flipping over, but the gentle rocking, waves and wind will put you to sleep in no time. Besides, people pay a lot of money to listen to those sounds falling asleep in their own apartment!

Every day we went to our favorite coffee house, Cafe Cabana, and shared a mocha and scone while sitting outside listening to the ocean and watching children playing on the beach. We ate the best lamb we have ever had in a tiny café  (that has sadly closed since our last visit) on the water and one early morning while walking on the sand, we got engaged.

We were there in the winter but apparently during the summer the town gets a little crazy. The beaches host surfing and volleyball competitions. The surf and competitions are so popular that they attract visitors that sleep in sleeping bags on the beach or couches that sit in the local’s front yards.

The town is named for the extinct volcano Mauou (Mount Maunganui) and sits on top of a sand bar. Get lost in a hike around the volcano, go during the summer season to catch the surfing competitions or go to have a romantic night that neither party will forget.
